小型衛星群當天眼 守護雨林和地球資源

巴西北部巴拉州(Para)當局每週都會接獲警報,告訴他們亞馬遜森林又有哪一部分遭人砍伐,而且「有圖有真相」。

美國的衛星每天上午10時30分拍下這些照片,可觀看地面上每3到5公尺的詳細狀況。

透過某種運算,將自動協助揭露盜伐林木的地點。當局再派員進行調查,可能在森林遭到進一步破壞前逮捕嫌犯。

發送警報的SCCON公司總裁菲利克斯(Iara Musse Felix)說:「在過去得花6天時間,有時2或3個月沒影像,現在則是每天都有。」

叫做行星(Planet)的公司所經營的衛星群,對森林以及整個地球監測方面帶來這項重大變革。

曾任職美國國家航空暨太空總署(NASA)的3名科學家2010年在舊金山成立的行星公司,在小型人造衛星領域執牛耳。小型人造衛星較容易生產和更換,任務壽命往往在3到5年間。

傳統航太產業建造大型、精密衛星,效能遠高於小型衛星,但須耗資數億美元。行星公司採用的經濟模式與傳統航太產業大相逕庭。
